Skylights

Brighten up your house with skylights

Most homeowners have no problem choosing doors and windows for a room, but things get a lot more complicated when you start talking about installing skylights. Residential skylights are windows that sit in the middle of the roof, allowing light to cascade into a room from above. They have become quite trendy in recent years, particularly because they can add a lot of value to a home.

Most people realize that skylights can be quite visually impressive, but not many people realize that skylights can also improve your home’s energy-efficiency. Not only do skylights allow you to illuminate a room without any electric lights, they also also let in a lot of heat. This means that you won’t need to use your furnace as much as if you didn’t have a skylight (of course, the opposite is true if you live in a hot climate). This is something to keep in mind before you purchase a skylight for your home.

Tubular Skylights

For those who are worried about the downside to skylights (potential energy inefficiency, UV damage to furniture, etc.), tubular skylights may be a good solution. Tubular skylights include a roof-mounted light collection tool (that is usually made of an acrylic lens inside a metal frame), a reflective “sun scoop,” and a diffuser lens that spreads the collected light evenly throughout a room.
