Shutters
Complement your windows with shutters
Before glass windows were invented, people used shutters to close off the openings in their homes from wildlife and the weather. Today, window shutters are an excellent way to accent the exterior of your home. Exterior shutters also serve a practical purpose, as they can help control how much light passes through your windows and how visible the inside of your home is from the street. Shutters can also be used in the interior of a home, usually as an element of design.

There are a few common styles of shutter. They are:
- Colonial shutters. These shutters are particularly popular in the Northeastern U.S. Their most notable feature is adjustable louvers.
- Plantation shutters. These are very similar to colonial shutters, but they have louvers (also know as slats) that are wider. They are more popular in the south.
- Panel shutters. These are much like doors, only skinnier. They often include a cut-out shape, such as a half-moon or star.
- Double-tier shutters. The main feature of these shutters is that they have upper and lower sections that can open and close independently of each other.
- Café shutters. Café shutters are much like colonial shutters, but they only cover the bottom half of a window. This allows light to enter, but also creates privacy.
Shutters were traditionally made of wood, but today they are made of all kinds of building materials.
