Cornices
A cornice resembles a mantelpiece and caps the top of a window. Basically a wooden valence, a cornice is typically constructed like a long three-sided box. Cornices are either stained to match the window frame or upholstered with a fabric to match the curtains or blinds used on the windows below. Although cornices are more tailored in appearance than valances, they perform the same function by topping a window and concealing the window hardware. Cornices are typically more expensive then valences because they are constructed of wood rather then fabric and can be decorated with moldings, or covered with stain, paint, patterned and cushioned fabric or wallpaper. Cornices start at approximately $60 online.
