Bedroom Themes

The theme of your bedroom is a personal decision and it can relate to your interests, fantasies, or to anything else that defines your personality. The options are endless. Bedrooms can be decorated in themes such as Victorian, rustic, European, modern, contemporary, colonial, leather, western, tropical, desert, outdoors, seaside, etc. You can also use your nationality or occupation as a theme. Themes are meant to be creative so feel free to use a popular one or come up with something unique. It's your room and there's no right or wrong when it comes to choosing a theme for it. Once you have your theme picked you can then add the appropriate furniture to it and decorate it as you please. Your room colors will largely depend on the bedroom theme you choose.

[what's this?]

The important thing about implementing a decorating theme is to keep it consistent. Consider your wall coverings, window coverings, bedding and artwork as well as your furniture. If you are going for a country cottage theme, for example, keep colors light and airy, and choose floral prints for the wallpaper, curtains and bed spread. These do not need to be the same print, but they should have similar colors and flowers.

Because the walls are the largest area, they should get the subtlest treatment. The curtains might be a little punchier, but it is the bed spread that can make the biggest splash. Use the bed spread as a focal point that draws the eye and defines the theme. In a child's room, for example, you might choose a Spiderman theme. Paint the walls superhero blue, and for the curtains find red fabric with black spiderweb designs. The bed spread should feature a full-sized image of Spidey in action. Accents around the room can bring in more red and black.

Bed spreads are available in just about any style and color imaginable, but if you can't find one to match your theme, go to a fabric store. You can sew a duvet-style cover out of almost any fabric. It is the bedroom after all - make sure the bed is the showpiece of your theme.
