If you plan on moving to a country home our summer cottage in a rural area then chances are you’ll need a septic system. A septic system treats the sewage right in your own yard rather than going to a municipal sewage treatment plant. The system functions by receiving all the household wastewater, treating it to a safe level and then releasing the treated water back into the groundwater system. A traditional septic system consists of a septic tank and soil filter (also known as a leaching bed). The septic tank is used to separate the solids from the liquids in the wastewater and to allow for the breakdown of organic matter. It is typically made of a watertight material such as fiberglass, concrete or polyurethane. The size of the tank required will depend on the number of people living in the household. After passing through the septic tank, the partially treated water flows into the leaching bed. The leaching bed is basically a soil filter that provides further treatment to the wastewater using natural processes. To take care of your septic system you will need to have easy access to the septic tank because it will need to be pumped out every three to five years to prevent the buildup of sludge.
